The Note 7’s fail gave opportunity to a lot of phone manufacturers to flaunt their tech in phablets. The phablet range has been a must for all the manufacturers thanks to Samsung for their Note series. The Note series led the technology front in the phablet range but due to the Note 7 fiasco they had to lose the year to the others and boy oh boy did the others take advantage of it showcasing their prowess, especially Xiaomi and Huawei. Huawei by launching its Mate 9 has really made huge waves in the phablet market of 2016.
Huawei Mate 9 was one of the most anticipated phablets of 2016, with its narrow bezels and stylish design Huawei had covered a lot of ground in the phablet market.
The phone has a full HD 5.9 inch screen with a 2.5D glass at 96% NTSC colors (this is the color accuracy of the screen. Phone manufacturers now a days are emphasizing on it). The screen has a contrast ratio of 1500:1. The chipset is Kirin 960, Octa-core processor (Cortex-A 73 Cortex-A73 2.4GHz + A53 1.8GHz). The phone comes with a RAM of 4GB and 64GB storage. The microSD slot is a hybrid and uses SIM2 slot. The phone comes with the latest EMUI 5.0 based on Android 7.0 Nougat. The phone consists of a dual camera setup 12MP color + 20MP black & white, 4K video capture and Leica branding. This time around Kirin supports the 4K recording. The camera features F/2.2 lens hybrid zoom (capable of 2x magnification), OIS and can change focus and lighting in photos after they are taken. The selfie cam is 8MP with f/1.9 lens. The battery is 4000mAh with fast charging which is capable of charging the phone to 58% in 30 minutes. Those are some serious numbers. The phone has a fingerprint reader that can unlock the phone in 0.4 seconds. The phone also has an IR blaster and USB Type-C connectivity with (USB 2.0 speeds not 3.0).
Mate 9 over other phones
Huawei has redesigned its EMUI with the new 5.0 version. It brings a lot of things to the table. The company states that you can open 90% or more apps with three taps or fewer. Huawei has brought back the knuckle gestures and also introduced split-screen. Also Mate 9 has rounded edges which make holding it more ergonomic. Huawei’s new system automatically frees up RAM and frees up unused memory. The system also uses compression to fit in more stuff. There is a machine learning algorithm installed which has 1,000 application acceleration functions which promises to noticeably improve the performance of the phone.
The Mate 9 surely comes at a time when people are looking for a Note 7 alternative. The market is slowly getting flooded with phablets and Huawei has just entered to make the competition fiercer.
