Sony has pulled out all the stops with the launch of new Xperia XZ3. The phone competes with Samsung Galaxy S9 and other top-of-the-line Android flagships. XZ3 is based on the ambient flow design language which is Sony’s ways of saying that they produce one of the best looking devices on the market and we can’t disagree. This time around, Sony is following Samsung’s screen design and implementing a curved screen on Xperia XZ3. The device is protected by Gorilla Glass 5 from the front and back. Xperia XZ3 has aluminum 7000 series frame which is 40% sturdier than Xperia XZ2 Premium’s. The back is more curved and ergonomic with relatively sharp edges giving it a more premium and modern feel.
Xperia XZ3 Introduction
Xperia XZ3 houses a 6-inch OLED panel with 19MP Motion Eye camera on the back. The stereo speakers on board are 20% louder than the previous ones. They come with S-Force surround sound technology which gives a clear sound and a really immersive experience. The fingerprint sensor is placed on the back of the phone, in the middle which can easily be confused with the camera lens hence making you smudge your camera a couple of times before you get a hang of it. Xperia XZ3 continues the tradition of having a physical camera shutter button which we are huge fans of. The phone has a rating of IP 68 of water and dust proofing, a feature which Sony pioneered in smartphones. There is also support of 512GB card in the hybrid SIM tray, so you wouldn’t be running out of space any time soon. At the bottom there is a USB Type-C connector which sports Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ with Qnovo tech to make sure you battery charges swiftly and safely.
Sony Xperia XZ3 Features
Sony has been making brilliant phones but their pace has been slow in making drastic changes to compete with the competition. Sony had been using LCD LEDs before but this is the first time ever that they have put an OLED panel in one of their phones. Coupled with BRAVIA tech, the picture quality is remarkable. This is the only phone in the world that up-scales SDR content to HDR and can play it natively as well. So all you Netflix users can get hooked on to this phone and watch your favorite shows in HDR. For consumers without Netflix, they can still use YouTube’s HDR to play content on their phones and show to their peers how punchy and vibrant colors are on that massive panel. The OLED panel has QHD+ resolution. Sony incorporates its TRILUMINOS technology, X-REALITY and a Dynamic Contrast Enhancer. Sony also claims there are new AI-driven improvements will enhance HDR even further.
Sony has not been slow in making full use of the OLED panel. There is an always-on screen feature available. You can select clocks of different styles, notifications that you would like to see and a sticker to go with it.
The camera has also been upgraded in terms of quality though the module remains the same. Sony being the first company to incorporate RAM in the camera which helps the phone process images quickly and accurately. Sony’s imaging tech has been the best in the world but they have been lacking behind the competition when it has come to image processing quality in mobile phones. However, this seems to be addressed with Xperia XZ3. The Motion Eye sensor still has the 19MP Sony IMX400 sensor. The sensor size is 1/2.3” with an aperture of f/2.0. The field of view is 25mm. Sadly, there is no OIS on board but there is EIS and it is one of the best we have ever worked with. Sony is the only phone maker in the world which produces mobile cameras that can record HDR in 4K and 960fps in full HD. Predictive capture works quite well. This is a feature that will be appreciated by a lot of users around the world. The camera captures even before you press the shutter button so that you don’t miss a shot. The phone can also fire up the camera using its sensors as soon as you take it out of your pocked helping you capture the best image at the right time. Sony calls this Smart Launch. Sony Xperia XZ3 has BIONZ processing technology which will help capture low-light conditions perfectly. The exposure is also controlled in pictures where there is bright sky. The phone has beauty mode and bokeh mode for perfect selfies through its 13MP front snapper.
As far as the software is concerned, Sony has incorporated a plethora of new features for users to tweak their handsets according to their preference.
The main feature is the new side sense which is activated by double tapping either side of the phone. This brings in a shortcut menu which is arranged through use of deep learning algorithms which learn about the apps you use and at which specific time of the day. The shortcuts in the Side Sense menu are then displayed accordingly. Tweaking of the screen is also available if some users might fancy changing how their screen reproduces colors.
The phone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. The battery has a capacity of 3,340mAh which is enough through Stamina Mode to power you through the day.
Sony will launch the phone with Android Pie 9.0. This is by far one of the most feature rich and stylish phone of 2018. We will go as far as calling it phone of the year 2018. The features are certainly not offered by any other smartphone in the world and on top of that the quality of the software and hardware is among the best we have ever seen. The phone’s price point is lesser than that of Galaxy S9 series which makes it a bargain of a flagship.
